Shop Kitchen ▾
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar, plus more for coating
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses


  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees . Grease 2 baking sheets.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine first 6 ingredients.
  3. In a large bowl, beat butter, sugar and egg with an electric mixer on medium speed until pale and creamy, about 5 minutes. Add molasses and beat thoroughly. Add dry ingredients and beat on low until dough is moist and well combined.
  4. Form dough into 1-inch balls (about 1 heaping teaspoon each), then roll them in granulated sugar. Place balls 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. Bake 10 minutes.
  5. Let cool on sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
