How to Save Your Skin This Winter

Suffering from dry, flaky and itchy skin? You are not alone. The cold, wind, and lack of humidity and in the winter can really dry our skin out and leave us feeling chapped, raw, and sensitive at times, says Deanne Robinson, MD, a dermatologist in Connecticut. But it’s officially time to forget the flakes—we’ve got expert tips and amazing products to cure your winter skin blues.

Using the right ingredients is essential when it comes to nourishing skin. Hyaluronic acid prevents your skin from losing too much moisture, says Stalina Glot, an esthetician at in New York City. For very dry skin, Robinson recommends products that contain ceramides, which are essential fatty acids that help rebuild the barrier of our skin and lock in moisture.

The same goes for what to avoid. Skip foaming cleansers and products with alcohol and astringents, says Glot. They tend to be very drying. You also want to steer clear of any potentially irritating ingredients, like topical retinoids or stronger acids such as glycolic, which can be tough to tolerate in the winter, says Robinson.

While it’s natural to want to take a long, hot shower, this can actually be detrimental to your skin. Overly long or super hot showers strip the natural oils from our skin, leading to dryness and dehydration, says Robinson. She suggests to gently pat dry after rinsing and to apply a rich nourishing cream immediately on slightly damp skin to lock in moisture.

Pick your products wisely. Creamy cleansers, nourishing moisturizers and oil and hydrating masks are all good options. Click through to check out some of our faves, beginning with this one:
